This week we are reviewing cause and effect relationships and nonfiction text features.  We are also drafting and revising our papers.

Week of 12/8/14 Objectives

This week we will continue to identify cause and effect relationships while we read.  We will also continue to read unfamiliar words by looking for prefixes and suffixes.  In writing, we are continuing to draft and edit our paper we have begun writing.

Please continue to have your scholar log into Istation or Compass Learning for additional reading practice.

12/1/14 Objectives

This week we will learn about cause and effect relationships. The cause tells what happened or why it happened.  The effect is the result of what happened.

We will also use prefixes and suffixes to determine the meaning of unknown words.

In writing, we will begin drafting a personal narrative.

Thanksgiving Break

During the break, please have your scholar to log into their Istation account.  They will have an assignment to work on.  They do not have to log in everyday.  I want them to keep what we are working on fresh in their minds.  If you have not done so, please go to http://www.istation.com/ and download the program or app to your computer or tablet.  The process is very easy.  If you need help, just email me. The students know their user name and password.  If you do not have internet access, please make sure that they are reading and do a reading response. Thank you for being a partner in your child's education and have a great holiday!

11/17/14 Objectives

This week we will work on making inferences while we read.  We will take our unit 2 test Friday, November 21.  Look out for the study guide in your child's binder. We will not have spelling words this week.  Please have your child log into their Istation and Compass Learning accounts for additional practice.

11/10/14 Objectives

This week will we identify the characteristics of poetry. We will continue to look at nonfiction text features.  Please continue to have your child to log into Compass Learning, Raz-Kids, and Istation for additional practice.

Spelling

Spelling tests are given each Friday.  Please make sure that your child is cutting out and sorting their words in their categories every night. The categories are listed on the word study homework sheet.  Please refer to the homework page on the website for the daily spelling activities. On the test, points are given for correctly spelling the word and putting it in the correct category.  If you have any questions, please send me an email.

11/3/14 Objectives

This week we will explain the difference in point of view in biographies and autobiographies.  We will also look at the features of literary nonfiction.

Week of 10/27/14 Objectives

This week we are making text to text connections using Patricia Polacco books that we've read.  We are continuing to summarize books using BME (beginning, middle, and end).  We are also looking at character traits and motivation. We are using context clues to find the meaning of unknown words.

Week of 10-20-14 Objectives

This week we are working on summarizing text using BME.  The beginning, middle, and end of the text.  We are also doing a Patricia Polacco author study.  We have read My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother, Babushka's Doll, and The Keeping Quilt. We are making connections between the text using evidence from the text.  When your child is retelling or responding to text, please make sure they are referring back to the text to provide evidence of their thinking.  Examples are below.

I read...
On page...it said...
For example...
I think...because...

We are also continuing to work on context clues.  When your child comes to a word they do not know the meaning they should use the clues around the word, their schema, and infer (make a logical guess) the word's meaning.
