ELA Unit 4B Test

3-23-15 Objectives

This week we are looking a persuasive text.  This is expository text where the author tries to get the reader to agree with his or her idea or opinion about a topic or idea.  We will also begin writing our own persuasive text.  We are reviewing how prefixes and suffixes change the meanings of words. 

Rodeo Field Trip Permission Slips

Just a friendly reminder that the rodeo field trip permission slips are due this Friday, March 6th.  If you have not already done so, please make sure you fill it out and send it along with $5 dollars with your scholar. 

3-2-15 Objectives

This week we are reviewing how to summarize expository text.  Please have your child read expository text and have them summarize the text to you using the main idea and important details. 

Reminders

Tomorrow we will have our ELA unit 3 test.  Please use the study guide and homework to prepare for the test.  Tomorrow is the last day to order books from Scholastic.  You can send the order in with your scholar, or you can order online.  Use the link previously provided.  Also, please send in Box Tops.

Week of 1-26-15 Objectives

This week we reviewing for our unit 3 test on Friday.  Your scholar should have a study guide in their binder.  We are reviewing expository or nonfiction text.  Students should be able to infer, summarize, identify cause and effect, and main idea in expository text.  Please make sure that they are able to provide text evidence for their answers.   
 
In writing, we are revising our draft to include compound sentences.  We are also revising to add details they lets our readers "see" by using show don't tell.

1-20-15 Objectives

This week we will continue to identify the main idea and supporting details of expository text.  We will begin summarizing non-fiction text as well.  We will also continue drafting and revising our papers in writing. 

1/12/15 Objectives

This week we are learning how to identify the main idea in nonfiction text.  We are asking ourselves what does the author want us to know about this topic.  We are also using the heading to help us.
 
In writing, we are revising our drafts. We are also learning how some affixes change the part of speech for some words.

Week of 1/6/15 Objectives

This week we are reviewing making inferences.  Students should be able to use clues or evidence from the text, their schema, or background knowledge, and make a logical guess about what is happening in expository text.  We are using context clues to distinguish between the meanings of homophones and homographs in text.  We are also drafting narratives.  

Reminders

We will have our spelling test tomorrow.  Due to the Winter Holiday, homework is due on Friday.  Our scholars perform again tomorrow at 2:00.  Please send them with a red shirt and black bottoms to change into.  I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow!

Homework/Spelling Test
